Entry into Shochu Waste Liquid Treatment Business

Sumikin Bussan Corporation has developed a shochu waste liquid treatment system jointly with Biso Giken Corporation (Headquarters: Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture; President: Keichi Nishijima) to purify wastewater produced during the making of Japan's traditional shochu distilled spirit. Water quality tests conducted with the system through the Kagoshima University Faculty of Fisheries (Location: Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture; Department Head: Tatsuro Matsuoka) have recently yielded remarkable results, prompting Sumikin Bussan to commence commercialization of the system as a foray into the environmental business.

The treatment system makes effective use of a cleaning fluid with specialized SBN Enzymes formula after the shochu waste is separated into liquid and solid portions. The liquid portion is cleaned in a continuous batch treatment tank, eliminating the previously problematic release of foul odors and yielding post-treatment water (purified water) that far exceeds the effluent purity standards for river discharge and sewage treatment. The solid portion is dried at low temperatures to avoid destroying the vitamins and other nutrients it contains, enabling reuse as high-quality animal feed comprising part of an environmentally friendly recycling system.

In the past, shochu waste liquid was discharged into the ocean or applied to farmland. However, Japanese statutes coming into effect in April 2007 based on the London Convention and its 1996 protocol will more stringently regulate ocean disposal. Local governments are also tightening regulations for dispersal of the waste onto farmland to prevent soil contamination and illegal dumping.

To commercialize the treatment system, Sumikin Bussan is establishing Sumikin Bussan Green Team Co., Ltd. as a new wholly-owned company engaged in treatment plant construction, SBN Enzyme sales, maintenance and related tasks.

The new firm will initially target the shochu industry with anticipated sales of ¥500 million in its first year and ¥3 billion after three years. The firm will then build on its acquired expertise to expand into other food waste liquid and effluent treatment operations as a business helping to prevent water contamination and other pollution.

< Treatment System Features >
• SBN Enzyme cleaning fluid effect
Content: Environmentally friendly combination of enzymes carefully selected for waste liquid treatment
Odor: Deodorizing formulation eliminates foul odor release
• Treatment of liquid waste portion
Continuous batch treatment tank system: Dramatically enhances cleansing efficiency by passing only the supernatant liquid at each stage to the next tank

BOD: Biochemical oxygen demand  COD: Chemical oxygen demand  T-N: Nitrogen  T-P: Phosphorus

• Treatment of solid waste portion
Cost reduction through low-temperature drying: The action of SBN Enzyme cleaning fluid enables drying at around 65°C for leaner running costs
Quality animal feed through low-temperature drying: The low temperatures preserve the vitamins in the waste, enabling reuse as high-quality animal feed
